Heat pumps collect heat from the air, water, or ground outside your home and concentrate it for use inside, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. Since they operate by moving heat instead of generating heat, heat pumps can provide similar heating and cooling at as little as one quarter of the cost of operating a traditional furnace or air conditioner.
There are two main types of heat pumps: Air-to-Air and Geothermal.
The most common type of heat pump is the air-source heat pump, which transfers heat between your house and the outside air. Depending on the size of your lot, the subsoil, and the landscape, a geothermal (ground-source or water-source) heat pump could be a better choice. They transfer heat between your house and the ground or a nearby water source. Geothermal heat pumps cost more to install, but have low operating costs as they take advantage of constant ground or water temperatures.
Why should I consider installing a heat pump?
- Today’s heat pumps can reduce your electricity use by an average of 30% – 60% compared to electric resistance heating such as furnaces and baseboard heaters.
- High-efficiency heat pumps also dehumidify the air better than standard central air conditioners, resulting in less energy usage and greater comfort in your home.
- For older homes without ducts, air-source heat pumps are also available in a ductless version called a mini-split heat pump.
With today’s increasing hydro rates, heat pumps are quickly becoming one of our most requested products.
