Buying a new air conditioner or furnace? Consider these factors first
I don’t think anyone is ever excited about buying a new heating or cooling system. It’s not something pretty that you look at in the middle of your family room, you don’t actively use it every day and you don’t give it much thought unless it’s not working. Not to mention they aren’t cheap. So, when faced with the idea of getting a new air conditioner or new furnace it is an easy choice to pick the cheapest option and be done with it. There are a few factors that you should consider other than the price.
Choosing the right company
The HVAC companies out there range from big corporations to small operations running out of their garage. The prices also vary with different size companies. A smaller company may be able to undercut the “big guys” but be weary of two very important factors: 1) will they be able to deliver a quality installation? The installation is the biggest factor in determining whether or not your equipment will perform up to expectations. Good installers are highly skilled, licensed professionals that command good salaries. Knowing this, you need to question how a company can undercut another, is it because they have inferior installation staff? 2) Will the company be there to honor the warranty they offered you? If the company is very small, likely not. Your warranty is your biggest defense against breakdowns as your new air conditioner or furnace ages. If you can’t get them fixed under warranty the amount of money you are putting into your heating or cooling system goes way up. When you go with a sometimes more expensive option from a reputable company that has been around awhile, this is isn’t something you need to be concerned about. You can feel confident that when you need to take advantage of that labour or parts warranty they won’t have closed down, they are in it for the long haul. Then that potential little bit more you paid in the beginning has actually saved you money later on when you didn’t have to pay for one or more warranty repairs.
High end equipment gets high end results
There are different brands of air conditioners and furnaces that all vary in price either by a very small amount or a larger amount depending on the manufacturer. While these various brands may all get the same results, there are some that are considered better than others for different reasons such as build quality, efficiency levels, available features and proprietary technologies. Depending on which of these are most important to you, you may pay more for a specific brand because it offers you that particular feature or benefit you are looking for in a furnace. Within each brand there are different levels that you can choose. All start with a standard option and then they go up in price from there. Each brand has a different price point for their standard option and then more expensive options that come with more frills. Sure, the starter furnace will still heat your home but it may not do it as effectively as a more expensive option.
These are the two most important factors when you are considering which company to use and which furnace to install. It is best practice to get quotes from a few different companies so that you can compare prices and different brands as well.
